Out of Home Advertising (Billboards and EMCs) Growth Rates Outperform All Other Traditional Media

Out of Home Advertising (Billboards and EMCs) Growth Rates Outperform All Other Traditional Media

The average individual media consumption is now more than eight hours a day. 46% of the world’s population is already online and consumer internet forecasted to increase 12% globally this year. All this means, the outlook for digital media is as bright as the one for traditional media is dim. People nowadays are reading blogs instead of newspapers and magazines. They watch Netflix and Hulu instead of TV. They skip ads with their DVRs. They listen to Pandora and Spotify over broadcast radio. Traditional media is slowly dying, with the one exception of Out of Home Advertising (OOH). All other traditional media types struggle. Nonetheless, OOH -Billboards and Electronic Message Centers- has been growing for years. That growth is not expected to slow down any time soon. Why is that and how can we take advantage of that growth? Dounkin donuts out of home advertising led sign Out of Home gives the advertisers the ability to reach an elusive audience while they are seated in their cars or in the park. A captive audience, often bored with nothing else to do. A message in a billboard or an electronic message center is not surrounded by editorial programming or photographs competing for the audience attention. It allows for great demographic targeting. No wonder is one of the most cost effective forms of advertising. Those are several of the reasons why, OOH is one of the oldest forms of advertising, and is still one of the most effective. Nevertheless, that doesn’t explain why Out of Home Advertising’s revenue has been steadily growing for the last 24th consecutive quarters. OOH has an expected compound annual growth rate of 4.8% from 2014-2019. This healthy outlook is mostly because Out of Home advertising has been benefiting from the advances in technology. OOH has transformed itself into an amalgamation of traditional and digital media. It is this digital part of Out of Home advertising that is responsible for the growth of the overall type of media. Digital is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9.8%. Its share of the total OOH advertising will move from 34.7% in 2015 to 43.5% in 2019.

Digital Out Of Home Advertising

Express Employment-Grayscale our of home advertising LED The advent of digital displays in OOH advertising and the ever larger percentage of TV viewers skipping commercials with their DVRs is making Out of Home Advertising an increasingly appealing way of connecting with consumers. Digital Out of Home (DOOH) gives advertisers all the advantages of traditional OOH advertising. It also ads the ability to use impactful and dynamic imagery and video feeds the same way a television can and nobody can “skip” a fixed sign on the road. Moreover, digital signage gives the advertiser an unprecedented flexibility achievable only with online advertising. These OOH displays are controlled by a computer. Even better, more sophisticated devices use internet based accounts, accessible from any internet enabled devices. A good examples is Cirrus Systems with the LED cloud. Display owners can easily change the content of their signs by accessing their accounts. Changes can be made with programs that resemble image editors with a calendar. This not only allows for targetting different demographics at different times of the day or days of the week. It also enables different consecutive messages. Easy software admits for easy and frequent testing in real life scenarios. Changes in marketing campaigns directions are virtually free. And it is simple and fast to use current events in messaging, etc. With cloud based software, Digital Out of Home is as versatile as online advertising. Those are the reasons why Digital Out of Home is thriving. It merges the advantages of traditional Out of Home Advertising, TV and online, in an easy to use, affordable package. To take advantage of this growth one needs to “go digital”. Equally important is to partner with a display provider that is on top of hardware and software technological advances. This provider needs to constantly innovate, and provide a robust offering that allows for flexibility, targeting, and video solutions. Ask and You Shall Receive: New Holiday LED Video Backgrounds

Ask and You Shall Receive: New Holiday LED Video Backgrounds

At Cirrus, we do our best to keep our ears open to find out what LED screen owners and sign shops want from their LED displays. From things as complex as our initial complete re-design of the LED board or our revolutionary cloud based software, to our posterior hardware innovations, such as the introduction of a new size (1x2 feet) with the Blade system or the development of an ultra-affordable, state of the art, grayscale system, such as the Solo. Yet, we also try very hard to listen to our customer’s smaller requests, like providing leasing for our screens or a design guide to help our sign shops sell a complete sign to their clients. With that in mind, in the past couple of months, we have been receiving a lot of requests to improve our LED cloud’s video library. We listened and agreed with what you had to say; our video library needs more content. That is why, our marketing department began a project to add seasonal and everyday video backgrounds that will help our display owners make the most of their signs. To spearhead the project we just added six more video backgrounds to our content library right in time for the holidays. These free videos are our way to tell our customers, tree“Thank you for your loyalty and support. We listened and here is our small gift to you. Happy holidays from everybody at Cirrus LED systems.” The new video backgrounds include: 1.- A beautiful, green Christmas tree that appears as if it is growing in a glowing light with a red background and falling snow.present This Christmas tree loops every fifteen seconds, appearing and disappearing on the screen. 2.- Animated white boxes with red ribbons falling down the screen on a dark red background. This video is great for Christmas but can be used all year long to announce sales or any other gifting opportunity. Big ornaments 3.- Green, golden and red, delicate ornaments twirling around on a red background. There are two size options for this background, so choose the one that fits your sign the best. 4.- Santa Claus parachuting down the screen with snowflakes; a really cute Christmas treat that will work better on bigger screens.Santa 5.- And last but not least, exploding fireworks, great for the end of the year but also for any explosive announcement your establishment has, such as the fourth of July or any other celebration. Remember that you can easily add your customized text on top of video backgrounds. So, create memorable messages and use these vivid images to create a connection with your audience. fireworks5 These holiday themed video backgrounds are just the first of several videos our marketing department is preparing for our customers. Cirrus’ goal is to add over twenty new videos this year in time for the different holidays and celebrations such as Valentine’s Day, Spring, Easter, Memorial Day, Summer, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and so forth, as well as, common themes such as sales, celebrations, parties, graduation, religion, food, sports, financial, and other more abstract and versatile backgrounds. So, if you have a suggestion as to which video background would benefit your sign the most, feel free to send it to, post a comment on this blog post, or let us know on our social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Google plus, Linkedin, or Instagram.

The LED Sign Design Revolution – Sign Media Canada

The LED Sign Design Revolution - Sign Media Canada

An article written by Cirrus LED System’s Digital Marketing team member Guadalupe Tofalo-Davtchev and entitled “The LED Sign Design Revolution” was featured in the September 2015 issue of Sign Media Canada. The LED Sign Design Revolution1The article discusses the vast changes the light-emitting diode (LED) digital signage industry has seen in the past few years. It explains how fundamental shifts in LED components, software and hardware will force LED sign factories to adapt quickly to survive competition from more innovative LED sign manufacturers and other digital display technologies. Further, the author believes deconstructing and rethinking every part of the LED advertising board is necessary to keep up-to-date with the current technological advances the industry is facing. Click here to read or download the full article or here to read the entire Sign Media Magazine. About Sign Media Canada: Sign Media Canada is the only publication dedicated to serving the entire Canadian sign media community. In addition to an established audience of sign professionals, Sign Media Canada reaches companies in the print graphics, digital imaging and advertising fields – reflecting the growing stature of signs as a hot, new advertising medium. Security and Privacy for Wireless LED Signs

wi-fi securityMost modern LED signs obtain their content and are managed wirelessly. The controller - the CPU that controls the LED sign - communicates via wi-fi with a computer or a remote server. This computer or server hosts the software that controls the sign and by communicating with it, the controller can ascertain if there are changes in the playlist, schedule or settings. The ability to communicate with a display wirelessly has many advantages over older forms of connecting with it, some of which, I will mention below. Yet, a question that comes up often, is how is the security and privacy of the sign handled when information travels through radio signals in the air? USBMany LED signs still force their owners to update their content directly from the billboard or electronic message center via a plugged-in USB drive. This is burdensome and inefficient because USB drives usually don’t have a lot of storage capacity and break easily. In many cases, this can even be dangerous since lots of LED signs are high up on a pole and adjacent to really busy streets. Security and privacy are also compromised in these types of signs since anyone with a high enough ladder can access the USB drive and either take it or replace it with their own. A better solution is to have the display hardwired using a phone modem or a serial cable that is connected to a controlling computer. Still, that also poses several problems. For one, if the sign is far from the computer, it will require a considerably lengthy cable; Which is expensive, could be in the way of things, or needs to be placed underground and it’s likely to malfunction. The longer the cable, the more potential places it can break. Moreover, since it is hardwired to one cpu, the sign can only be managed by the computer that most of the time, needs to comply with several hardware and software specifications (for example, have a windows operating system of a certain version) to be able to run the LED sign software and communicate with the controller. These signs are very secure since they can only be accessed by one specific computer. Nevertheless, the lack of flexibility and the high potential for failures makes them slightly unreliable. wi-fi securityMost modern digital displays are controlled wirelessly. The controllers in a wireless LED sign have a wireless radio built within or are connected to one and that wireless radio bridges with an access point connected to the customer’s computer or to the business’ internet connection. That allows for the sign to be placed at a considerable distance without having to deal with a lengthy cable. When the access point is connected directly to a computer, we face the same problem we had before: that computer can manage the sign, and the computer needs to meet several requirements to run the software. When the radio pair is connected to the internet, the controllers connect wirelessly with a remote server that hosts the content management system software. This means the sign can be managed from any device that has an internet connection, be that a computer, a laptop or a tablet or phone. There are no special hardware or software requirements since the software can be accessed from your internet browser from anywhere that is convenient to the LED sign owner. That means macs, android or linux can be used. This option offers the most convenience, flexibility and is not constrained by distance or hardware requirements. Still, despite the unquestionable advances and advantages the internet allowed, one thing that has always been a concern has been its security. If information be accessed from anywhere, how can developers make sure no-one but the sign owner can control the content on the sign? This is essential in the case of government and highly visible projects, but it is also important to any business owner that invested in a digital display. Wifi security has improved significantly over the past few years. Nowadays, several very effective security and privacy methods are in effect to protect wireless communications from unwanted intruders. The most common are: A) Encryption: It’s the most effective way to achieve data security. The file is encrypted, “translated” into a secret code. To read an encrypted file, you must have access to a secret key or password that enables the software to decrypt it or understand the secret code. B) PIN lock security: A pin lock is an authentication measure that requires the entry of a secret personal identification number (PIN) before a device can be “unlocked” and used. C) Password protection: The owner of the software specifies a personal, secure password and the software doesn’t allow access to anyone that can’t input the password correctly. Unlike pins, passwords take alphanumeric and sign characters and usually differentiate between upper and lower case letters. Wireless bridging: The wireless bridge connects two wi-fi pairs to each other and only to each other. Meaning the controller wi-fi pair only communicates with the access point on the other pair. D) Wi-fi protected Access (WPA/WPA2): Wi‑Fi Protected Access encrypts information and makes sure that the network security key has not been modified. Wi‑Fi Protected Access also authenticates users to help ensure that only authorized people can access the network. Wireless Intrusion Prevention and Detection Systems: are network devices that monitor the radio spectrum for the presence of unauthorized access points (intrusion detection), and can automatically take countermeasures (intrusion prevention). Most wireless LED Sign manufacturers, like Cirrus LED Systems, use a combination of several security methods to protect their displays from intrusion. The flexibility of this type of signs added to the several complex security measures taken to protect them makes them the ideal option for most business users. Outdoor Digital Signage: Top Ten Trends for 2016

It’s time to start reviewing trends to prepare Outdoor digital signage Marketing and Sales plans for 2016. Almost two thirds of Americans own a smart-phone. And more than half of all households own a tablet. That means that what people demand from their interaction with technology has shifted drastically. Nowadays, people are impatient and expect everything to be personalized. Things need to be readily accessible on their schedule, no matter where they are. It follows through that this also applies to Outdoor Digital Signage (LCD and LED Outdoor Digital Displays). And this shows in the key factors in next year trends:

Content Trends in Outdoor Digital Signage

1.- Outdoor digital signage Imperial Theatre at nightDynamic Data: This is really good news for Outdoor Digital Signage. Dynamic content is what Digital Signage is all about. It is what differentiates it from other types of outdoor signage. Consumers are bombarded with information all day long; their minds can’t cope with the amount of outside stimuli. Therefore, the only way to capture their attention is showing them something different by the minute. Motion and variety are big winners when it comes to attention-grabbers. 2.- Personalization/ Targeting: Privacy concerns going down. As a result, people expect you to know: when to reach them, where to reach them, and how to reach them. Consumers expect each message to talk directly to them and address their needs. Outdoor digital signs, like LED signs, offer the necessary flexibility to target your audience. Use different messages according to the time of the day and every day relevant events that might have occurred. 3.- Less creative, more useful: An epic one-liner will still keep you in the minds of the consumers. Still, the younger the audience, the less they trust or care about advertising. So much so, it has been said that Millenials: “Hate Advertising” . At least, traditional advertising. Your content needs to be useful, relevant, and, hopefully, social.

Hardware Trends in Outdoor Digital Signage:

4.- Small, light panels:Left-Side-of-Blade-Panel-Outdoor digital signage Think back to smart-phones and tablets. People expect their technology to become lighter, thinner. Everything needs to be easier to manipulate and accessible to the masses. Old, cabinet-style, assembled-in-china LED-signs are a thing of the pass. The fact that they can only be handled by professionals is a red flag. The fact that they take months to arrive to its’ destination another. People will favor of more modern LED board/ LCD panels designs. 5.- Modularity: Following the previous point. People don’t want to wait for months for their LED digital display to arrive. People don't want a heavy and bulky box. Easiness of assembly is gaining points in the list of digital signage customers must-have. 6.- Serviceability: Clients are not interested in waiting for an expert to come repair their LED screen on-site. Even worse, wait for someone to take the display away for repair. People are impatient. Everybody expect things to be able to be solved online or over the phone. 7.- Energy efficient: People have the environment and their wallets in mind. Anything that can help either or both is a huge selling point.

Embedded Systems Trends in Outdoor Digital Signage:

8.- Embedded Sensors : Smart phones and wearable health monitors are using more and more sensors. Modern sensors make the overall technology experience something close to magic. Customers want the same from all of their devices. Sensors are part of the hardware but interact with the software to improve the performance of the Outdoor Digital Sign. For example: Temperature sensors can trigger notifications before the sign overheats. Humidity sensors can warn about dangerous levels of moisture. Light sensors can help adjust the brightness of an LED sign to the conditions. Software Trends: 9.- Web Based Content Management: People expect their software to work on their schedule and not vice-versa. That means, any software should be Coloured-Social-Media-Icons-Round accessible at any time from any computer. Even better, available from from their phones and tablets. Digital displays content management software is no exception. 10.- Social Media/ Social ads: The fine line between content and software. With individuals trusting advertising and brands less and less, the power of social endorsement becomes more and more important. social networks have a great advantage over the competition. Outdoor digital signs should have the capability to display social ads . What other trends do you notice on outdoor digital signage for 2015/2016? Let us know by commenting below or emailing us.

The Art of Fixing An LED Sign Hanging 50 Feet in the Air

Someone asked me the other day, “So, if something happens, how do you fix an LED sign hanging 50 feet above the ground? How do you access the back of the panels or open the cabinet?” I was a little confused. “What do you mean?” I answered. He knew our signs don’t have cabinets! “Well”, he explained, “but many times they are encased in a box. Even when they are mounted only with the frames; How do you access the back of the box or frame to fix them? Do you lift the LED sign? Do you open it to the side?” That’s when it hit me, one of Cirrus LED Systems major competitive advantages but something that rarely gets mentioned:Our LED panels are front-serviceable! And this new partner had no idea! No mystery Our Sales team likes to say that Cirrus takes the mystery out of the LED display. And we often stress the reasons why. We talk about how our Cloud Based LED Content management software, LED Cloud, simplifies the process of updating the display’s message. How it allows the owner to manage the content on it’s LED sign from any device and anywhere. We love to discuss how our modular system makes installing our electronic message centers a breeze and how it allows us to ship our signs 24 hours after being ordered. We sometimes mention how it needs to connect to only one circuit breaker and consumes very low energy. We go on and on about how revolutionary our design is in so many ways and how it simplifies the process of buying, installing, and owning an LED display. We do mention how our sealed modules with no moving parts or fans are weatherproof and a lot more resilient than LED signs designed in old fashioned ways. Still, we normally don’t talk about how our innovative design also makes it much easier to repair. Maybe, is because we don’t have a lot of replacements or because we don’t even want to think of our panels having problems. But, bad things happen even to the best of us, and sometimes our modules do need to be replaced. The good news is that we have a five year replacement warranty, and with our 24 hour lead time, our front and back serviceability and modular design, the process of fixing your LED sign should be even easier than installing it. front serv So, what exactly does front-serviceability mean? It means that you don’t need to access the back of the LED sign to take out an LED module or replace the panel. As the picture shows, you can insert a hex key on the front of the LED board, twist and the panel will unlock. This allows you to pull it forward and disconnect it from the daisy chain. Better yet, the controller also fits within the space of an LED panel, so if you need to access the controller, all you have to do is remove a nearby LED tile and take it out. If there is a problem with a panel, you mail it back to us and we’ll send you a replacement. When you get it, you reinstall it where the original was and, voila, problem fixed. Our signs are also rear serviceable if for some reason is easier for you to access the back of the LED sign. Needless to say, our partner was more than happy with the way I answered his question. “No, you don’t juggle with a flying box fifty feet in the air to access the back of the panels. No need to lift it or slide it to the side, you just get a hex key and easily remove the panel from the front.” What about you? What are your main concerns when buying an LED sign? What is your favorite Cirrus Systems’ feature? Let us know by commenting on this post!

Top Ten Questions Asked by Sign Shops to LED Manufacturers

We are always striving to provide our customers with relevant information about the LED signage industry. So, today, we went to the trenches and asked our Sales Team to tell us which are the most common questions you- the sign shop owner or employee- ask us-the LED Sign Manufacturer-. And here we provide Cirrus Systems’ answers to those frequently asked questions.

1. Is it difficult to install your LED Signs?

So easy a girl can do itNo, Cirrus’ modular design makes it so easy to install and assemble that even a girl can do it! The LED boards easily snap into the frames. After that, connecting the panels is easier than putting together a puzzle. The frames contain a hex head bolt-interlocking system that can be configured into any size or shape quick and easily. A couple of screw driver turns, a push of the lock and you are good to go. If you don’t believe us watch this video. If you still do not want to take the trouble to assemble our signs, for a small fee, we can put it together for you and ship it already assembled. Once the sign is assembled, daisy chain the LED boards and give us a call. We will set everything up remotely with our Cloud based LED software.

2. How do I run content in my sign if I don’t have internet?

Cirrus’ LED systems offer the LED display owner the capability of playing offline playlists. Nevertheless, our LED signs need to be connected to the internet to be set up and to update the playlist or schedule. The sign does not consume a lot of data, just enough to load the information once, so, no exclusive internet connection needs to be available, any internet access can be used. If the end user doesn’t have internet for their business, we would recommend them to talk to an internet provider to set up a connection, they are very affordable these days. Notwithstanding, if that is not something they can or want to do, they can purchase a wireless flash drive (available in most electronic or cell phone provider stores), or find other inventive solutions. We have even had customers connect their sign to a cell phone hot spot!

3. What is LED cloud software? What type of software comes with your sign?

led Cloud Software Update logoLED cloud software is the web-based software that runs all Cirrus LED signs and allows the owner to control the display integrated into their sign. This powerful LED display software comes free with all our LED display systems and allows you to easily control, create and modify the message on your LED sign. What are the advantages of the LED cloud? Since the software is cloud (or Web) based, it allows the sign owner to update the message on their LED sign from any device and anywhere. It is compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux desktops or laptops, and it also works with any smart-phone or tablet. That means the end user can control their LED display from their business, house, or even a coffee shop or the road. It also allows for the streaming of unique data onto signs such as social media feeds, stock quotes and headline news. Moreover, since the software updates over the cloud, there is no cost or need to install anything to keep it up-to-date. All that is done automatically. For more information about what software questions to ask when purchasing an LED display read our previous blog post. To schedule an LED Cloud demo send an email to

4. What type of security does the software have.

There are three layers of security built into the LED sign’s software. 1.- Encrypted API Key: Each LED Controller contains a unique key that is used to validate the LED display with our servers. Without this secure handshake between LED controller and server no content can be edited. 2.-Wireless Bridging: This is a WDS function of the Access Point that allows a particular LED display Controller (and ONLY that LED display controller) to connect to the Access Point. 3.- PIN number: Each LED display controller has a uniquely generated PIN number, the content of the sign can’t be changed unless the correct PIN number is specified by the controller whenever updating content.

5. How many power circuits do you need?

Top view of the Solo controller. Only one circuit is needed to connect every part of the display. The LED panels connect to each other in a Daisy chain and the last on that chain connects to the controller. The controller has a power cord. That is the one and only cable that needs to be plugged to a power line. The wifi unit, temp probe and all other peripherals are actually built into the controller (or supplied via data feed) and they are powered off that one connection.

6. What is the range of your Wi-fi pairs?/ How do I connect my sign to the internet?

Each controller has a built in wifi unit. That wifi unit is married to a long range wifi antenna with a range of up to 2 miles with direct line of sight. These units can connect even with obstructions between the wifi antenna and the signs itself but direct line of sight will always have the best result.

7. Why don’t you need fans?

Blade-LED-Panel-Back-Conductive heating w shadowOur systems are intelligently design so they consume less power and therefore generate less heat. Since our systems run cooler we do not need fans -which are prone to malfunction and consume more energy- to cool the interior of our LED panels. For a more in detail explanation of Cirrus’ revolutionary design, read this article.

8. What is your warranty?

Hardware Each of Cirrus LED displays comes with a five year limited part swap warranty on all parts and components manufactured by Cirrus Systems Inc. Replacement parts will be dispatched in the event of a product failure and, upon replacement, defective parts will be shipped to Cirrus for repair. Terms and conditions apply. Please click here to see the full warranty details.
Software Cirrus provides service, support, and unlimited software upgrades for the lifespan of all Cirrus LED systems.

9. How long would it take for you to deliver an LED sign upon order?

Since our LED panels are modular, we can keep them in stock in our facility in California and ship them to you within twenty four hours of placing the other under normal conditions.

10. What’s the closest install?
