How to Navigate the Supply Chain Shortages for Digital Signs

We’ve all read the stories about factories underproducing, ports filled with ships, and containers sitting waiting on docks. These supply chain issues lead to a shortage of products and mean you are left waiting for something you were hoping to utilize before years end. This has been no different in the digital signage industry. There are rumors of people waiting up to six months to get a sign installed from some manufacturers, which can be frustrating for business owners.

Here are some tips to help you navigate the supply chain shortages, and get a digital sign that meets your expectations and your needs, in a more timely manner.

What are the consequences of the shortages?

As we mentioned, long lead times are the biggest issue everyone is facing. This means that a large investment is being made in something you won’t be able to use for half a year in some cases. The main consequences are as follows:

  • Longer waits
  • Shortages of specific brands
  • Price increases on shipping as the cost of transport goes up.

Experts are suggesting the shortages will last into 2023 as the issues have rippled outwards from chip shortages to supply chain labor shortages. But in the words of Douglas Adams “Don’t Panic”. There are three easy ways to combat the troubles in the market and to be a smarter buyer.

1. Plan Ahead

This may seem simple, but is one of the best things you can do to ensure you get the product you need when you need it. Take the time to sit down with a signage expert and have a conversation about what you are trying to accomplish with your digital signage. This can help you plan out exactly what you need to reach your goals with your sign. These early conversations can reduce headaches later when you are ready to make the purchase.

2. Anticipate Delays

Knowing is half the battle. With some companies unable to provide you with a sign for up to six months, you need to be ready for that. With so many supply chain slowdowns you may find that timeline could stretch further and create even longer delays. Unfortunately, there is nothing any of us can do to shake loose the tangled supply chain, so we need to be flexible as we anticipate our digital displays.

3. Ask About Wait Times

Ask your signage partner what the wait time is for different displays. Look for partners who have shorter turnarounds and still offer the quality you’re looking for. Knowing what to expect in advance will help you plan how soon you’ll be able to utilize your new digital sign. You’ll sometimes find that there is a distributor who can help you get the sign you want, in the resolution you want, with half the wait.
